Incumbent serves as Truck Driver for the Highway Department, responsible for hauling materials and cleaning and maintaining roadways.
DUTIES:
Drives truck and hauls materials, including stone, asphalt, sand, and dirt. Delivers materials to various sites. Inspects and cleans trucks.
Inspects and repairs road surfaces. Hauls blacktop to paver and patches potholes. Hauls chips to chip box for chip/seal process.
Removes and replaces culvert pipes.
Maintains gravel road, including spreading gravel.
Cuts and clears brush from right-of-ways.
Flags traffic when roads are closed for repairs. Replaces missing/damaged road signs.
Performs seasonal duties, including plowing snow and treating roadways with deicer, mowing, and stock piling materials.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all departmental hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and medical examination.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
Ability to operate various trucks, equipment, and hand tools, including hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, driver, chain saw, road saw, ratchet, files, mop, broom, shovel, post driver, gauges, steam cleaner, manlift, pressure washer, grinder, drill press, tractor, dump truck, backhoe, sweeper, and loader.
Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving, sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, handling/grasping objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close/far vision, depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information/records according to state requirements.
Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, occasionally under time pressure.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations and plan/layout assigned work projects.
Ability to prepare detailed reports.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile individuals.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, and evenings, travel out of town to pick up materials, but not overnight, and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
Possession of and ability to maintain driver’s license and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsements and demonstrated safe driving record.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs duties with work priorities and schedules primarily determined by supervisor. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Incumbent plans and arranges own work and only refers to supervisor for unusual matters, such as policy interpretations. Incumbent has moderate flexibility in the job.
Incumbent reports directly to Foreman.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent’s duties often involve physical exertion, including driving, sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, handling/grasping objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, close/far vision, depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties in truck/heavy equipment and outdoors, including exposure to excessive noise, grease, dirt, dust, toxic chemicals, vehicle fumes, working in confined areas, high places, extreme temperatures, wet/icy conditions, inclement weather, and walking on uneven grounds. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, including wearing protective clothing and equipment. Incumbent may be exposed to potentially irate/hostile persons.
Incumbent occasionally works extended hours, weekends, and evenings, travels out of town to pick up materials, but not overnight, and responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
