Summary
The Maintenance Worker performs a variety of basic maintenance tasks within the Public Works Department. Duties include operating various types of power equipment; assisting in the maintenance of water mains, meters, valves, fire hydrants, and sewer lines; supporting in the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and vehicles; and maintaining landscaping, streets, signs, and the urban forest in a safe and efficient manner. The role also includes setting up and maintaining traffic control around special events and work zones, as well as participating in weather-related emergency operations, including snow and ice removal during winter events and clearing trees and brush debris following high winds.
The Maintenance Worker will participate in a rotating “Standby Duty” schedule, which requires employees to remain on-call for a 7-day period and be available to respond to work during evenings, weekends, and emergencies as needed.

This position is represented by IUOE Local 150. Wage rates, Specialty Service Roles, and other benefits are subject to the language in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Supervision Received
- Works under the direct supervision of a Crew Leader/Assist Water Operator (AWO) and general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor.
- Receives daily assignments, instructions, and guidance, but is expected to perform tasks with a degree of independence and self-direction.
- Work is monitored for quality, safety, and efficiency.
Supervision Exercised
- This position does not exercise direct supervision over others.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of basic and advanced maintenance work in all areas of the Public Works Department.
- Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Assists with operation and maintenance of construction equipment (wheel loader, backhoe, excavator, aerial truck, brush chipper, utility trucks).
- Assists in inspection, maintenance, and repair of municipal water-distribution and sewage collection systems.
- Locates Village utilities in accordance with Village and J.U.L.I.E. requirements.
- Performs as a flagger for crew working in traffic.
- Cleans and repairs sanitary and storm sewer systems.
- Cuts and patches asphalt pavement; cuts and repairs concrete sidewalks and curbs.
- Installs posts, repairs and replaces street signs.
- Completes parkway landscaping (tree removals, trimming, plantings, turf restoration).
- Assists with special event setup and cleanup.
- Regularly cleans assigned areas and maintains building and grounds.
- Monitors and assesses mechanical operation of equipment.
- Shovels and plows snow; loads salt and applies deicing solutions.
- Loads, hauls, dumps, digs, and shovels materials; lifts and uses heavy tools.
- Documents activities performed as required.
- Promotes a safe work environment.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must possess a current Illinois Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement or obtain within 12 months.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of a broad range of Public Works activities.
- Basic computer proficiency (BS&A, Microsoft Outlook, ArcGIS).
- Analytical skills to resolve equipment maintenance problems.
- Physical effort is required; work is outside in all weather conditions with exposure to hazards.
- Availability during evenings and weekends.
- Ability to meet post-offer hiring requirements of the Village.
- Ability to drive safely.
Tools and Equipment Used
- Construction equipment (end loader, backhoe, excavator, skid steer, utility trucks, mowers, tractors).
- Power and electrical equipment (two-way radios, computers, cell phone).
Physical Requirements
- Regular use of hands, reaching, walking, sitting, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and smelling.
- Frequently lift/move up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Requires vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus.
- Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate equipment.
Work Environment
- Regularly works outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, heights, wet/humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, risk of shock, vibration, uneven surfaces, and loud noise.
- Normal 40-hour workweek; extended hours possible due to emergencies, weather events, or workload.
- May require work on weekends and holidays.
Loss Prevention
Employees must develop and exercise safe work habits in order to prevent injuries and conserve resources.
